Jobs to test your skills
Jobs that challenge you to be better in the skills you possess can be some of the most rewarding jobs of your career. This doesn’t mean those jobs that overwork you to the point of exhaustion. It means those jobs where you are pushed to work hard, but succeed through ability rather than brute force methods like too much overtime. There are many reasons that such jobs can be excellent in your early career, with these being a small list of recommendations for why you should aim for challenging jobs rather than easy positions.
Challenging jobs give you a better looking resume
You will generally find that challenging jobs require you to use a broader base of skills than you may otherwise employ, and often require you to learn new ones. For your early career this can be extremely helpful, as while experience is often measured by the years you have worked in an industry, a wide range of experiences should value you more highly than other candidates who have worked for as long as you have.
You will feel more rewarded
Jobs that challenge you frequently with a series of small, accomplishable goals that you are specifically required to achieve will usually feel more rewarding than jobs with vague, long-term goals. This is due to people usually feeling similar feelings of achievement for accomplishments no matter how important they are. You may logically recognise that you should be prouder of larger achievements, but you will generally feel little difference. Challenging jobs are most often felt to be positively challenging because they offer constant small achievements that may add up to a much larger whole. Large government projects often have this mix of achievements, as several stages of planning and implementation can be necessary to the success of the enterprise.[googmonify]0507589526:right:200:200[/googmonify]
You will be challenged less in the future
Many people find that they desire challenging jobs when they are younger and have fewer things to concern themselves with in their personal lives, but as they get older they find overly challenging jobs to be too draining to feel rewarding. This is usually due to family or administrative positions in social activities taking up more mental energy. By being challenged now, you will change your concept of what challenges you as you become naturally more capable. Finding challenging work draining in the future can often be a case of not having experienced harder jobs in the past. Set yourself up for an easier later career by choosing jobs that will give you a better perspective of what really is difficult.
